ABSTRACT

Important collapses and damages have been reported worldwide in the last decades, on highway bridges. Examples of that are the bridge failures due to the Loma Prieta earthquake, in 1989, with a magnitude of 6.9°, the Northridge earthquake, in 1994 with a magnitude of 6.7° and the Kobe earthquake, in 1995, with a magnitude between 6.8° and 7.3° (vibration data webpage, 1999). Significant human life and economical losses were also reported (Gómez et al., 2002).
