ABSTRACT

The method of strengthening using the tied-arch is used in multi-span bridges that are affected by damage in its piers due to scour or erosion. The method involves the provision of a steel arch and hangers, which are able to lift the deck, unlinking it from of the infrastructure, eliminating the problem through the modernization of its into a tied-arch bridge with a unique span.

The change of the static scheme generates a new state of stresses and strain in deck and abutments. In countries with high seismicity this condition is increased.

The paper presents the results of analysis and evaluation of the seismic behavior of the abutments and its load bearing capacity, produced by the change of static scheme. For this analysis, the Puangue bridge, a continuous reinforced concrete beams bridge located in the town of Melipilla, is studied. The result obtained determines the feasibility of the strengthening method, using minor modifications of existing abutments.
