ABSTRACT

Property crime offenders have some of the highest rates of reoffending amongst all offending groups, with their reoffending imposing considerable financial and human costs on society. This chapter begins by reiterating why rehabilitation is important and why other approaches, such as punishment, have been shown to be ineffective. The chapter then considers how property crime offenders can be best rehabilitated, what options exist to do this, and why such approaches do not appear to be working at present. Offender behaviour programmes for property crime offenders are somewhat lacking, and there is clearly a need for greater research in this area, which will help to ensure that future rehabilitative efforts have the best chance of working. The chapter concludes by considering how research can be best designed in order to give the strongest evidence base to advance effective practice in the future.
