Advice for Case Management Staff

ByBrain Van Brunt, Amy Murphy

Case management can serve as a keystone mechanism through which universities support and keep students safe. Case management has a rich history within the fields of social work and psychology dating back to the de-institutionalization movement of the 1970s. Case managers provide lifelines to students in difficult situations. Students reach out to them in their most difficult times to ask for help with choices, seek expert advice on the college experience, or just to help figure out what options they really have. Case managers also contact students when they are struggling and remind them of the opportunities still available to them. Case management is a solution-focused approach to assisting students with a wide variety of needs. A quality case manager will often encounter rigid rules that make little sense, and that will require a little thought to arrive at a creative and helpful solution.
