Urban Nightlife Cultures

WithIrina van Aalst

This chapter reviews various policy-related aspects of urban nightlife, such as technological and “soft” surveillance, moral panics, and gender, to deepen our understanding of how governance, cultures, and economies of urban nightlife produce the mediated city. More specifically, it shows that technologies and practices of communication are an integral part of these developments. First, it explores the rise of night-time economies; second, it focuses on governing the city after dark; and finally, it describes the global similarities and variations in urban nightlife.
