ABSTRACT

In this chapter I show that urban environments are complex landscapes of mediated information and sensory experience. Focusing on the sensory enables us to ask new questions about older articulations of urbanity, such as: how can the urban be understood through the senses, and how can the relationships between the sensory city and media technologies be studied? As sensory experience is very context-reliant and depends on cultural interpretation in order to be understandable via writing, the detail given to describe the actual phenomena at hand is important.
