ABSTRACT

Substance Abuse Prevention: A Multicultural Perspective is the outcome of a State-of-the-Art-Review (STAR) project, directed by Professor Snehendu B. Kar at the Office of Public Health Practice of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health. Funding for the commission of these chapters was provided from a grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The objective of the Substance Abuse Prevention State of the Art Review (STAR) was to carefully review and evaluate available literature and professional expertise in community-based alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention in multicultural communities and to draw implications for public health policy, research, teaching, and practice. The emphasis of this project focused on multicultural communities where diverse cultures come into contact and interact to form a new culture, both dynamic and different from each of its parts.
