This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses engulfing fires in tanker trucks. It utilizes Tank-Car Thermal Computer Model (TANKCAR) to model the effects of fusible plug type temperature sensitive pressure relief valves and presents simulation results for different numbers of fusible plugs and for a fixed number of plugs to different melting temperatures. The book provides a general engineering approach to the modification of a bus facility to accommodate vehicles fueled by natural gas. It also discusses the characteristics of compressed natural gas (CNG) and flammable plumes that may result from its leakage into the surrounding environment. The book proposes an experimental setup to verify future theoretical analysis of gas leaks and to provide a source of data for those using CNG. It presents a case study on the calculation of axial forces generated in restrained pin-ended steel columns subjected to high temperatures.
