“The Enemy Is Without’

Another tagline of Zell’s success-which he calls “ Sam-isms”— reminds people exactly where the competition is. “The enemy is without,” Zell stated, a favorite Sam-ism that is illustrated by a cartoon of a wagon train drawn into a circle. The concept is that inside, within the team, there is support, protection, and cohesion. Outside the circle are the predators and competitors.
