Although the Kindred Healthcare success story is often attributed to Diaz as the CEO, he quickly gives credit to those whom he sees as most responsible: the team. “I’m blessed that I’ve surrounded myself with really smart people,” Diaz said. “Among the key leadership traits are having enough humility while also being self-assured enough that you can listen to your board, you can listen to your teammates, and you can surround yourself with true partners. Organizations benefit from that. Conversely, if you think you’ve got to be the smartest guy in the room, which often no one is, people get themselves in a lot of trouble.”
