ABSTRACT
Following the onset of democracy in 1994, the South African government attempted to redress the severe poverty and inequality that prevailed the country as a result of the previous Apartheid rule. This included an aim to achieve universal access to energy for households, and many well-intentioned policies were introduced to reach this goal. This chapter examines and evaluates policies to alleviate energy poverty South Africa and sheds light on some of the key factors that hinder their effectiveness. The conclusion proposes potential solutions to these challenges.
