ABSTRACT

Socially responsible and sustainable rewards integrate the interests of multiple stakeholders (owners, employees, local communities and customers) and motivate employees towards adopting socially responsible behaviours. When considering socially responsible and sustainable rewards, two perspectives emerge: (1) base pay and incentives that support CSR and sustainability; and (2) how rewards encourage employees to take socially responsible and environmentally sustainable actions (e.g., paid time off to volunteer and matching charitable contributions). This chapter examines both perspectives in terms of rewards design and implementation and if and how these programmes promote an organizational culture of social responsibility and sustainability.
