ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the educational theory, policy and practice in relation to speaking and listening. It highlights the need to embed the planning, teaching and assessment of speaking and listening in the everyday routines of the primary classroom. The book shows that how philosophical discussion with children can be used to develop intelligence, together with dialogic and thinking skills. It discusses how drama can present an unlimited range of contexts in which children can experience diversity in spoken language. The book is concerned with identifying the essential elements of effective storytelling and how to develop teachers' confidence and skills across the curriculum. It outlines principles and strategies to support bilingual language development. The book explores the educational context and the shift from Information and Communications Technologies to Computing.
