ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how a longitudinal analysis of published statistics can be of interest to stakeholders in the tourism sector in the Indian Ocean region. It also shows that both the Number of Nights Spent per Tourist and that Discounted Earnings per Tourist have remained flat from 1988 to 2000. Tourism is considered a growth industry in Mauritius. There is no doubt that tourism has contributed much to the economic progress of the island and to the general welfare of its inhabitants. Discounted Earnings per Tourist will remain static until Mauritius begins to attract the higher income tourists such as business travellers and convention delegates. The Mauritius Employers Federation and the Central Statistical Office in the National Accounts published an estimate of the annual contribution of Tourism Earnings to the annual Gross Domestic Product of Mauritius. It is also possible to calculate the average expenditure per tourist and percentage of total earnings generated by accommodation used.
