ABSTRACT

It is widely argued that employment is a sustainable means for poverty reduction since it is the greatest asset of the poor. There is a caveat, however. It is not any other type of employment that leads to sustainable poverty reduction such that ‘an employment goal which does not distinguish between different forms of work is clearly not sufficient’ (Rodgers 2008: 64). For employment to lead to sustainable poverty reduction, it must serve as a means to ensure that income opportunities are widely distributed, contribute to the effective use of society’s human potential and provide avenues for participation in both social and economic life.
