ABSTRACT
Asian women are beginning to view the virginity of Mary, not as a biological reality, but as a relational reality. For many Asian women Mary's virginity is an active symbol of resistance against patriarchal order. Actually her virginity, her ability to be a self-defining woman, grows because of her full range of life experience. Mary matures to wholeness by believing in God and herself and through her openness to an unknown future. "Through this maturing process, she is fertile, she gives life for God". Some Asian women think Mary's role in the salvation of humanity must be recognized as redeemer with Jesus Christ in the Christian tradition. One is envisioning Mary as a co-redemptrix by her role as a model for the liberation and salvation of humanity. The other is depicting Mary as a helper and mediator for the redemption of humanity.
