ABSTRACT

Whereas strategy provides a framework to assist decision making, policy describes the stance the organization will take in a range of business scenarios. Therefore strategy can be thought of as providing guidance, while policy ultimately provides constraints. This is best illustrated using a few example intellectual asset policy statements:

The organization will respect valid third party intellectual property rights. The organization will vigorously enforce its intellectual property rights. The organization will not disclose proprietary information to third parties, unless this is in the interests of the organization as a whole. The organization shall retain ownership of intellectual property generated by third parties on its behalf.
