ABSTRACT

The energy consumption of household appliances is more uncertain; variations in their type and power cannot be predicted, nor can changes in the use of the building itself. The energy consumption of household appliances and office equipment is far beyond the responsibility of architects and designing engineers of the building. Would stricter requirements have a stimulating effect on improving households and raising awareness of an energy- and environment-conscious lifestyle, or would unrealistically strict requirements only result in disappointment? The responsibility of the designing engineers is restricted to the correct interpretation of the user-related data and the provision of energy supply. Architects and engineers employ tools to limit heat losses, to increase utilizable solar gains, and to improve the efficiency of service systems. The engineers are responsible for the distribution networks, and working together with the architects they can provide an in situ source of renewable energy.
