ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Stoic thinking on cultivating the virtues, as an alternative to Aristotle’s better-known theory. It locates the cultivation of the virtues within Stoic thinking on ethical development in general, highlighting the close links seen by Stoics between developing the understanding of virtue and improving one’s relationships with other people and society. The chapter then considers four recurrent themes in Stoic writings on cultivating the virtues. It closes by outlining the work of a public engagement project, ‘Stoicism Today’, aimed at promoting Stoic ethical guidance, including guidance on cultivating the virtues.
