ABSTRACT

The construction completion of Buchwankwanzi allowed the committee to direct its attention to four additional objectives: to train a cadre of youth to act as tour guides, to mount a heritage trail in Katuruka that marked all key heritage places, to complete a census, and to continue in-depth interviews. As part of each guided tour, small sign posts were placed at 12 points along the trail. In 1978 the National Census documented 97 males to 100 females in the above-65 age group in Bulinda, the larger village of which Katuruka is a part. The overall approach of Katuruka research team yielded more accurate yet far from perfect results, they had confidence that it is more accurate than any conventional survey. The results are presented in this chapter with the caveat that these figures are only approximations, yet reasonable guidelines that provide profound understanding of the staggering impact of HIV/AIDS in these coastal villages.
