ABSTRACT

Archaeologists can research and describe the using material culture as important sources of information and understanding, regarding the finds as equally important as the older remains of traditional archaeology and human history. Despite becoming more popular, the type of archaeological study presented remains more unusual than typical. This chapter presents a review archaeological research in the villages of Zdziary and Klyzow in south-east Poland as an example of micro-studies of contextual interpretation focused on the material culture heritage of the Great War. The general reconstruction and conservation of ex-Galician war cemeteries from the time of the Great War has taken place mainly since the early 1980s. The initiatives of some local communities and history enthusiasts are its main driving force. In Poland, the Great War is only selectively remembered by some local groups. In contrast to Western Europe, especially France, Great Britain, and Belgium, it has never been a fundamental part of national identity or national mythology.
