ABSTRACT

It is encouraging to note the growing interest of cognitive psychologists, such as Dr. Hunt, in cognitive processes in relation to individual differences. Linked with sound theories of information processing and individual difference variables it is even conceivable that the earlier studies of the effects of more global variables can be replicated in more sophisticated fashion. In considering the application of information regarding individual differences in information processing to school learning, Hunt has observed that information processing involves more than a capacity, it involves a strategy and strategies can be learned. Although Hunt has been primarily concerned with verbal ability, there are likely to be many aspects of human ability that have been untapped by conventional testing, but may be predictive of scholastic performance under different instructional methods. While Hunt thus far has focused on individual differences in cognitive abilities, it should also be noted that information processing analysis need not be limited to cognitive abilities as individual difference variables.
