ABSTRACT
The rebirth of Islam in Guyana, formerly British Guiana, marked a significant new addition to Guyana's cultural and political landscape after slavery had ended the practice among some West African Muslims. During the periods of slavery, indentureship and British colonialism, Islam and Muslims were suppressed. In independent Guyana today, Islam has been firmly institutionalized at the local, national and international levels.
