ABSTRACT

One common research design uses the pre- post-test method in which the evaluator tries to discover if some change has taken place during the implementation of the programme. While most people in the field agree that there is still a need for systematic research studies to evaluate specific aspects of peer counselling, it is also clear that peer help programmes are difficult to evaluate because of the complex interplay of many different factors and processes. A peer support service by itself is unlikely to reduce bullying or drug abuse. The peer counsellors benefit in terms of qualities such as heightened self-esteem, social maturity and increased capacity to communicate effectively with their peers. Schools often introduce peer support services as part of a response to an identified social need such as tackling bullying or drug abuse, or promoting inclusive education for students with physical or educational difficulties.
