ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses punk pedagogy as a self-empowering strategy that could help graduate students resist the neoliberalization of higher education culture. In order to do so, and drawing from previous works on punk, anarchist and critical pedagogies, the author proposes one possible ideal roadmap to graduate school through the category of “punk graduate students”: graduate students who question the prevailing modes of thought and the authority within graduate school and academia while trying to foster solidarity and collaboration to resist the spread of neoliberal individualism. The chapter combines personal and theoretical perspectives to reflect on the impact of the neoliberal university on graduate students. The conclusion encourages students to envision alternative ways of approaching graduate school in order to contribute to the democratization of teaching institutions and society as a whole.
