ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development and implementation of a fully online intercultural communication course that aims to propel students to a higher level of intercultural competence and engagement while they are participating in an international exchange program. After describing the design and development of Intercultural communication and engagement abroad, it presents evaluation of the first offering and discusses the pedagogical implications. A content analysis of the qualitative data that was generated in the course revealed that the participants, in general, had become more knowledgeable about core elements in intercultural communication by the end of the semester. A review of the participants' oral and written narratives, and a comparison of data gathered at the beginning and near the end of the course, revealed that most had gradually become more mindful of the impact of their own attitudes and behavior in intercultural interactions.
