ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the interpretation of Judaeo-Christian and African Traditional religio-cultural traditions impact on the wellbeing of disabled people in Zimbabwe. It also advocates for a liberative approach to indigenous traditions, biblical traditions, biblical texts, beliefs and practices on disability. The chapter further engages and interrogates cultural beliefs that fuel the negative beliefs and practices toward disabled people. The main argument is that all human rights initiatives come to nought if men and women of God or religious practitioners in their ‘holy talks, spaces, places, platforms and scriptures’, do not interrogate certain cultural and religious beliefs, practices and teachings where disability is taken as a sign of sin, curses, disobedience, evil spirits, demons and witchcraft.
