ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the steps that the author took toward the building of an accessible house in Zimbabwe that meets his impairment-specific requirements, in order to fulfil Article 19 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It states that disabled people have the right to live independently and be included in the community. He argues that disabled people should have the opportunity to choose their own place of residence, including where and with whom they should live, on an equal basis with others. Hence, part of his advocacy work is on dismantling barriers faced by disabled people and promoting the building of accessible houses in Zimbabwe.
