ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of increasing size of container ships calling at European ports is explained by economies of scale. Ports, as one of the most important links in the logistics chain, are forced to follow this fast progress of ship size and to adjust all technology and process to the new environment. Not all ports are able to do this because they do not have enough container throughput and in this condition the transhipment ports become important players.
