ABSTRACT

The article provides a discussion on the chosen approach to rationalization of the tasks performed by public transport operators. The operating methodology was founded on utilisation of the features offered by a tool known as Green Travelling Planner (GT Planner). It is a specialised travel planner created for purposes of multimodal and eco-friendly travelling. The planner is capable of setting very accurate parameters of demand in the road network on a level being far superior than questionnaire-based surveys of transport behaviour patterns. The precision with which the data concerning the demand parameters are established makes it possible to determine exact physical locations of their occurrence in a geocentric system of the transport network. The surveys conducted by the authors imply that, within the area of the Upper Silesian conurbation (Poland), such a planner will allow for a sample representative of transport behaviour patterns to be obtained on a level as high as even 6% of the population (once it becomes available to the general public). Exact knowledge of the structure of demand in the transport network enables undertaking substantiated efforts aimed at sustainable development of transport. The pursuit of this goal can be reinforced by rationalization of transport-related tasks based on the data acquired by means of GT Planner. There is a perfect correspondence between the methodology proposed and the extensive framework of actions undertaken by the EU (European Commission 2011).
