ABSTRACT

Mobile learning in higher education exists and engages with a host of other educational technology trends and fashions. The other major constituent of the outer circle is the general global economic and political environment and its capacity to fund the continued growth of education, of higher education and of digital technology within higher education. Universities from the global North establishing campuses around the world, commercial online trainers gaining degree-awarding powers, and metrics-driven teaching and research are all part of a more competitive, corporate and managerial ethos among the major players in higher education. Starting at the outermost circle, the chapter identifies a couple of constituents that make up the environment of the global higher education system. Inner circle is probably the comfort zone of the mobile learning research community, where the challenges are to some extent contrived and controlled, where the research agenda is the one we, as a research community, have chosen and perfected.
