ABSTRACT

One of the sociological processes that is of some interest to me is the one that is known as the re-writing of history (Garfinkel 1967, Silverman 1975). And I suppose that is what I am doing in this chapter, as I look back on a book that was written twentytwo years ago and try to make sense of my later work in terms of it. Now if I were to do that in front of a job selection commit tee, I’d have to pretend that everything I’ve done since then logically followed from what I wrote over two decades ago. Fortu nately, to what is, I hope, a friendly readership, I can be more honest and point out the ways in which my work has diverged over that period.
