ABSTRACT

This chapter focusses on Diana's death, particularly her funeral service. It explores the question of how Diana's role as a celebrity affected the range of musical pieces included in the service. The chapter discusses the reach of sentimentality in Diana's funeral music. The music chosen for Diana's funeral exposed the tensions surrounding her status as the would-be once but not future queen. At the core of her funeral service, the celebrity musician Elton John sang a song that would be the biggest selling pop song in music history. John and Taupin's accounts of how the song for Diana came about vary slightly but these slight differences prove to be significant as they blur the origins of the song's creation. Although John claims he and Taupin wrote 'Candle in the Wind' about Marilyn Monroe, Taupin maintains he got the original idea for 'Candle in the Wind' from a quote he read about Janis Joplin.
