ABSTRACT

Relatively little is known about the use of green space by the growing immigrant population of Finland or about their attitudes toward it, despite the recognised potential of green space for socialising, social solidarity and social integration.5 Among the most important questions that need to be addressed are: do immigrants use parks and other green spaces in the residential areas where they live, or in other places? And how do they use them? Are there differences in the usage of green space between different immigrant groups, and, if so, what causes such variations? As the basis of research for this chapter, extensive field observation was carried out from 2010 to 2012. In addition, data on the issues affecting the use or non-use of green spaces by immigrants was collected through short intercept interviews and through more detailed thematic interviews.
