ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys both of the categories – the value of community engagement and a display of that engagement as well as the projects' artistic products created in Elephant and Castle. It discusses that public participation is figured through the discourse of space that can be understood only with a view of time when the public engages with it to build a sense of belonging to that space and so, make a 'place'. The compromised stance of public artist in cases against public space comes from the artist's acceptance to justify the interference of divergent actors that have interest in appropriation of that space. Participatory artwork is destabilizing the juxtaposition of middle-class art world that is comfortable in most environments and lower-class people who do not traditionally interact with art goers. Temporary built environments, transitory places and mobile architecture embrace diverse publics – community groups, visitors, creatives and experiences enabling cycle of short-term, experimental, festival-like interactions within a long-term programme.
