ABSTRACT

Digital technologies have the potential to profoundly transform architecture practices and techniques. The chapter investigates another approach, one that sees digital technologies as platforms from which architects can develop new techniques, giving rise to innovative works of architecture with significant cultural effects. The new elegance seeks to operate within this contemporary realm of the network by facilitating new connections between people and architectural form and space. The formal richness of the new elegance provides architecture with the ability to restore intricacy, detail, and beauty to the urban fabric, creating innovative architectural possibilities for a rapidly changing world. The new elegance accomplishes its goals through four primary tools: diagrams, technique, structure, and system. The new elegance is a method of complete design that refines digital processes of research, technique, and structure into design intelligence capable of solving architectural problems in innovative ways as well as producing innovative contributions to the discipline of architecture.
