ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to provide higher-education students and practitioners already working in related fields with new ideas and insights from positive psychology (PP). It introduces a range of ways in which topic could be of value in real-world settings and provides suggestions for research topics and activities within applied practice. The book also provides an introduction to the emergence and scope of PP, an overview of contemporary issues. It focuses on similarities and differences between sport and exercise psychology and PP, and makes case for the value of PP to enhance the former. The book addresses a key topic in PP, namely: passion, character strengths, optimism, mindfulness, enjoyment, gratitude, relationships, and resilience and mindsets. The aim of PP is to acknowledge the importance of understanding qualities associated with what makes life most worth living and to use to balance psychology's preoccupation with pathology.
