ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the conceptual and practical aspects of positive subjective experience – flow and enjoyment – in sport and physical activity contexts. After a brief overview of positive subjective experience, the flow and enjoyment research conducted in diverse sport and health-related physical activity settings is reviewed. Then, research and practice utilizing social and psychological techniques/interventions for enhancing flow and enjoyment within sport and physical activity is presented. Results of this review suggest that flow and enjoyment are key concepts for understanding and enhancing the sport and physical activity experience.
