ABSTRACT

Sports coaching is complex, unpredictable and novel at the point of delivery. Models for sports coaching exist to guide coaches in managing this uncertainty. This chapter suggests that coaches (and coach developers) should use these models with caution and as a map “for” practice and not “of” practice. With this philosophy, we make a case for a kinder, more appreciative reflective process (to help make sense of sports-coaching practice), providing context-rich examples from the sports-coaching world. We provide recommendations for adopting a more appreciative stance and for coaches and coach developers to consider the merits of a more humble, humanistic and curious approach to practice.
