ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the concept of degrowth is presented as an alternative solution to the present socio-economic structure. Based on the idea that economy is a subsystem of the environment, limited and thermodynamically closed, degrowth economy proposes a quantitative reduction of production and consumption, along with changes in culture, attitudes and system of values. Originating at the intersection of different disciplines and theoretical backgrounds, degrowth economy involves interrelated research areas such as sustainability, wellbeing, ethics and democracy. In this chapter, the pillars of degrowth are identified and the main principles and initiatives are elucidated. The focus is on a set of bottom-up activities initiated by individuals or small group of peoples, particularly after the global economic crisis, and on some of the main research gaps, possible developments and future research projects. The feasibility of degrowth and policy implications are also discussed.
