ABSTRACT

Blackout (2015), a series of concerts-in-the-dark performed by Kirkos Ensemble, explored the blurring of sensory boundaries, specifically, the ways in which taste is connected to the more comprehensive sensory experience of which it is a part and to which it contributes. Accompanying each performance were aromas and foods chosen to reflect the textures, melodies, tones and pitch of the music. This chapter highlights the transformative potential of these concerts, in the sense that they encouraged audience members to become entangled within an affectual landscape; to think differently, to perceive and relate emotionally to the music in ways that an ordinary concert would not.
