ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses Behavioral, Humanistic-Existential, and Psychodynamic Approaches to Couples Counseling. It focuses on the constructivist, critical, and integrative approaches to working with couples. The book looks at a case conceptualization in two primary areas: a theory of problem formation and a theory of problem resolution. It provides an in-depth overview of the primary theories of couples counseling. The book explores the common factor of the therapeutic model while also bringing forth how therapists from that model may utilize the already occurring strengths and resources of clients and increase their hope and expectancy all via a distinct therapeutic relationship. It explains how the model views why couples have difficulties. The book explores the theory of problem resolution–how that model understands change. It also provides a mock first session with explanation for why the therapist made certain interventions.
