ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of sustainability activities at the University of Michigan. One of those efforts is designed to promote a greater understanding of sustainability among members of the university community and, more generally, to create a stronger culture of sustainability among its students, faculty, and staff. The chapter then describes an ex-post evaluation called the Sustainability Cultural Indicators Program (SCIP), which was designed to monitor progress in moving toward this goal. SCIP involves annual web surveys to measure the extent to which levels of awareness and pro-environmental behaviors are changing over time. SCIP is the mechanism for measuring, evaluating, and tracking progress in moving toward a sustainable campus culture at the University of Michigan. SCIP is also being used to evaluate experimental or trial sustainability programs that could be tested in one or a few buildings before being implemented throughout all university buildings.
