ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on interpreted communicative events. The goal is to study the content discussed in a medical consultation and the form in which the content is discussed – in other words, the “what” and the “how” of these events. This is achieved by reviewing the existing literature on the topic and exploring empirical data from authentic bilingual-healthcare consultations mediated by interpreters in healthcare settings. One of the biggest challenges in healthcare provision, especially when more than one language is involved, is the provision of mental health care. This chapter also briefly reviews the literature on interpreters working with patients diagnosed with mental health conditions to reflect the peculiarities of interpreting in this specialty and looks at how different technologies impact interpreter-mediated communication.
