ABSTRACT

Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is covered in Chapter 8. EDA is the process of “getting to know” or familiarizing the researcher with the values within the data (rather than the structure of the data as discussed in prior chapters). Topics include univariate methods to visualize data such as box plots, density plots, and histograms. Multivariate techniques such as correlation matrices and scatterplots are covered, as is the importance of identifying spatial dependencies. A discussion of the use of software and code-based products to accomplish the EDA process concludes the chapter.
