ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the 'Cruise to the Edge (CttE)' – a programme that sees the 1970s British progressive rock heroes Yes at centre stage. It discusses the context of mobilities studies, tourism and the varie-gated geographies of music and thus conceptualizes the subject matter. The chapter presents an overview of recent developments in the cruise industry as a fast-growing segment of maritime industries, thus building the socio-economic framework of this market segment. It provides some evidence on rock cruises as a particular case of event-based tourism in the cruise industry. The chapter introduces the 1970s progressive rock band Yes and their landmark record Close to the Edge, whose persistent popularity can be seen as a template for the development and marketing of the CttE cruises. It examines the products and practices associated with the rock cruise, as this practice combines movement and mobilities with custody.
