ABSTRACT

Participatory approaches have their origin in action research and have been used since the 1930s. These approaches emerged more strongly the author responds to top-down planning processes in rural development projects. At the beginning of the process, a scientific study was conducted at each site to improve understanding of researchers on the resource status or situation. At the end of the workshop, the fishermen agreed on a scenario, but they requested a guarantee on razor clam price because the simulation suggested it was likely to decrease. Later, all participants discussed the results of the workshop with the Provincial Governor and he agreed to support their decision. At the beginning of the process, data on bycatch diversity were collected from fishermen who use two fishing gear types - the collapsible crab trap and the crab gill net - in different zones both within and outside the bay.
