Domestic violence (see Chapter 5) and sexual assault have been well documented for some time now (General Assembly Resolution 68/191), but the brutality of the other extreme forms of violence against women and girls has until recently received virtually no attention from national governments, let alone the international community. However, the growing number of shocking acts perpetrated against women has been exposed by the media and nongovernmental organizations, and this has led the United Nations and State governments to draft laws and develop intervention and prevention strategies.
