On 19 March 1848 Eliza Fletcher wrote to Matilda Wilson:

Vive la République!! my dear friend - have I not thought of you continually since the 23rd of February? have you and I slumber’d since 1798 to be awaken’d once more by the tocsin sounding in the streets of Paris? who shall say that human improvement is not progressive? who that compares the revolution 1792 with the revolution 1848 will doubt that justice and humanity have not succeeded to anarchy despotism and bloodshed. 3
