ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY Liposuction is routinely employed by plastic surgeons concerned with removing subcutaneous adipose deposits in various areas in the body to improve gure aws and create a more balanced physique [1-4]. In 2013, liposuction was the second most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedure, with 313,011 patients undergoing lipoplasty. In the past 15 years, liposuction has seen a 77% increase in its number of surgeries performed. Furthermore, suction lipectomy is the most common aesthetic surgical procedure performed in men [5]. Indeed, liposuction consistently ranks among the most common aesthetic surgery procedures. The aspiration of fat using blunt cannulas and negative pressure suction was rst popularized in Europe in the late 1970s [6]. Three French surgeons, Drs. Yves-Gerard Illouz, Pierre Fournier, and Francis Otteni, were the rst to present their lipoaspiration experience at the 1982 American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Subsequent to Illouz’s presentation, over the years, many alterations and modications have been employed to minimize risk and improve cosmetic outcome of the contouring procedure of liposuction [7-11].
